TikTok blocking content on Palestine-Israel conflict, says Fahmi

PETALING JAYA: There is evidence that social media platform TikTok has systematically removed content from Malaysia related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, says communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said this evidence supported the numerous complaints received by his ministry from users that their videos and live broadcasts on the matter had been taken down or restricted, Bernama reported.

He added that these included videos of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s speech during the “Malaysia Stands with Palestine” rally at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

“For example, there was content on the prime minister’s speech and several pictures from Gaza. However, TikTok in their feedback claimed that there were violent images involved.

“However, when I viewed the content myself, the pictures were of a father carrying his lifeless child. No blood, nothing gory.

“To me, this doesn’t make sense. I am furious with TikTok,” he was quoted as saying after launching the ministry’s Palestinian Humanitarian Fund at the Angkasapuri Media City.

Fahmi said he held a meeting with TikTok to convey the government’s position on the matter yesterday, and it will be followed by another meeting next week.

Fahmi added that he had requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to issue a stern warning to TikTok and arrange a meeting with the social media platform to address the matter.

He said a meeting with Meta will also be arranged following a fake message received regarding restrictions on content related to “solidarity with Palestine”.

“If they want to play around with us, we will take a very, very firm stand.

“We don’t want our freedom of expression, especially on issues relating to Palestine, to be restricted by irresponsible parties for certain reasons,” he said. - FMT
