The Malaysian government has been urged to boycott the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders' Week in San Francisco, California, US, this November.
Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said that doing so would be a sign of Malaysia's protest against the US government's stance in the conflict in Gaza.
In a press conference at the Parliament building today, he said that boycotting the Apec meeting will send a strong message to the US that “if these attacks do not stop, or the 10th emergency special session of the General Assembly on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fails or the US uses the veto, then we should boycott the Apec meeting”.
"For this time only, Malaysia should be able to halt its participation," he said.
He also believes that such an action will demonstrate Malaysia’s solidarity with Palestine while, at the same time, protesting against the US for supporting Israel and allowing genocide to continue.
It was previously reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will lead the Malaysian delegation to this year's Apec meeting, where Asean leaders - except those from Myanmar's military regime - were also invited for a separate meeting by US President Joe Biden.
For the record, today (10pm Malaysian time) UN General Assembly president Dennis Francis will chair the 10th emergency special session of the General Assembly on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In a letter to delegations of member states, he said he had received a letter dated Oct 19 from the Arab Group chairperson and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation chairperson, requesting to convene the special session as soon as possible.
