Minister: No plans to reinstate UPSR, govt focuses on new 2027 curriculum

The Education Ministry will not reinstate the Standard Six UPSR exams in all primary schools, despite calls from a segment of parents.

Berita Harian quoted Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek as saying that the ministry will continue to focus on ongoing engagements towards developing a new curriculum by the year 2027.

She reportedly said concerned parents can assist the ministry by channelling their ideas during a nationwide tour of the planned new curriculum.

"We want a wider engagement to seek inputs that can strengthen the country's education system.

"Now we want to focus on a holistic evaluation of our children, particularly on their overall development that will ensure, among others, character building," said the Nibong Tebal MP in Penang today.

Previously, among concerns raised by parents include how a lack of standardised examination at the primary level has affected students' motivation to succeed, and a further decline in overall standards.

The Education Ministry had in August launched an online survey to kickstart plans for the implementation of a new curriculum in the year 2027.

The UPSR examination was first introduced in 1998 and was cancelled in 2021, to be replaced with a school-based assessment system.

In 2021, the then administration also cancelled the implementation of the PT3 examinations at the secondary level. - Mkini
