Prasarana to start work on 'open payment' system next year

PARLIAMENT | Prasarana Malaysia Bhd (Prasarana) will commence design and development works for its planned "open payment" system in March next year, offering an additional option to rail and bus passengers.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the system will allow passengers to use their credit or debit card to access Prasarana's rail and bus services in the Klang Valley, on top of the current modes of purchasing a token or tapping their Touch-n-Go cards.

"Prasarana will take 11 months (from March next year) until February 2025, to equip 50 percent of all turnstiles at all stations to accept the open payment system.

"By August 2025, all turnstiles at all stations will be equipped (to accept)," Loke (above) told the Dewan Rakyat during question time today.

He said this in response to Wong Chen (Harapan-Subang) who enquired on the progress of Prasarana's plan to increase payment options for its services including LRT, MRT, and RapidKL buses.

Loke added the system, already used in cities such as London and Sydney, can be expanded to incorporate other payment modes such as QR scanners.

Meanwhile, Loke revealed that the KTMB Automatic Fare Collection system has also been upgraded to support the open payment system.

"All 57 Komuter stations have been equipped with turnstiles that support open payment systems using credit card, debit card, Touch-n-Go, as well as QR Code via the KTMB mobile app," he said. - Mkini
