Home ministry drafting bill for welfare of police retirees, ex-officers

Deputy home minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah says 13,864 applications for aid by police retirees and former officers were approved from 2014 to 2022, involving a financial implication of about RM19 million.

KUALA LUMPUR: The home ministry is drafting a bill to regulate the welfare of police retirees as well as former officers, says its deputy minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

He said the bill was being scrutinised by the ministry’s legal officers and that engagement sessions would be held next year before it is presented to the Cabinet and then tabled in Parliament.

“This bill will be used as a source of authority for, among others, the registration of police retirees and former officers, and the regulation of their association,” he added.

He said this during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today, in response to Shamshulkahar Deli (BN-Jempol) who asked if the ministry and police had plans to introduce a law for police retirees, such as the Veterans Act 2012 which safeguards the welfare of armed forces veterans.

Shamsul Anuar said the bill could guarantee the distribution of aid to police retirees and former officers and ensure that this is done more efficiently.

Earlier, in response to Shamshulkahar about the breakdown of aid, Shamsul Anuar said a total of 13,864 applications were approved from 2014 to 2022 involving a financial implication of about RM19 million.

Payment of about RM1.29 million will be made this year to 1,595 successful applicants, he said, adding that they include funeral expenses, medical aid, and aid channelled through Tabung Amanah Warisan. - FMT
