RM1.52m target met: Ramasamy calls it 'biggest Deepavali gift'

Former DAP leader P Ramasamy’s crowdfunding campaign has surpassed the target of RM1.52 million, seven days after it was launched.

In a Facebook post, the academic-turned-politician said that as of 11am today, the total stood at RM1,523,187.38.

Describing it as his “biggest Deepavali present”, the former Penang deputy chief minister thanked his donors for their support.

“I was confident that the community would help me in my moment of need. I will never forget this community,” he said.

Ramasamy (above) launched the crowdfunding campaign on Nov 3 after the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered him to pay Muslim preacher Zakir Naik RM1.52 million within 30 days.

This comprised RM1 million for general damages, RM100,000 for aggravated damages, RM250,000 for exemplary damages, and RM70,000 in costs.

Ramasamy, who is appealing the judgment, pledged to be transparent with the collection. He said excess funds would be used for the benefit of the public.

In 2019, Zakir filed two separate defamation suits against Ramasamy over the latter’s statements.

The first suit is related to Zakir's speech in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, on Aug 8, 2019, and the second lawsuit was related to the mass arrests linked to alleged attempts to revive the defunct militant group Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam (LTTE).

On Nov 4, the Indian-born preacher, who is a permanent resident of Malaysia, said he would donate the RM1.52 million to the Palestinian cause. - Mkini
