PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister and Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s reversal of his decision to not defend his party post shows he intends to stage a political comeback, says former minister Salleh Said Keruak.
A day after announcing he would bow out of the race for the Bersatu presidency, Muhyiddin said at the party’s annual general assembly yesterday that he had changed his mind after speaking to his wife.
Analysts have commented that the U-turn may have been a strategic move aimed at gauging the support of party members.
Salleh, who is also a former Sabah chief minister, questioned whether Muhyiddin was trying to mislead his adversaries.
“Most people are wondering whether Muhyiddin employed a strategy of trickery and deception to lull his internal adversaries.
“I wonder who among his political adversaries would believe his recent statements and become the victims of deceit,” he said in a Facebook post.
Salleh speculated that the former premier was trying to “camouflage his real intentions” from the current prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, as he has long held ambitions of returning to power after resigning in August 2021. - FMT
