Vigneswaran retains MIC presidency for third term

 

Former Dewan Negara president SA Vigneswaran has retained the position of MIC president for a third term after he was unopposed at the close of the nomination period for the party’s leadership election.

Nominations closed at noon today and Vigneswaran’s (above) selection was announced by deputy president M Saravanan at the party’s headquarters.

The decision is in line with the resolution agreed to by the party’s delegates during the 77th MIC General Assembly in November, which was to prevent any competition for the positions of president and deputy president in this election, which is set for April 12.

“Congratulations to SA Vigneswaran who retains his position as MIC president for the term 2024 to 2026,” read a post on MIC’s Facebook account today.

Vigeneswaran has held the post since taking over from former health minister Dr S Subramaniam in July 2018.

Meanwhile, Saravanan, who is also the Tapah MP, described the re-election of Vigneswaran to MIC’s top post as proof that the party’s leadership is united.

“Tan Sri retained the position of MIC president for the third consecutive term after nominations for the party president closed at the party headquarters this afternoon. MIC is now more united than ever and continues to look forward.

“Apart from fighting for the fate of the community, MIC is the only Indian-based party in this country that has a high commitment to the welfare and education of the Indian community,” he claimed, also on Facebook.

Saravanan, who is the party’s only Dewan Rakyat representative, had previously announced that he would not run for the party’s highest office in this election. - Mkini
