Chopper collision: Armed forces to launch probe, offers condolences

The armed forces will form an investigation board to probe the helicopter collision in Lumut, Perak.

Speaking to reporters, Armed Forces Chief Mohammad Ab Rahman extended his condolences to the victims’ families.

“When such tragedy occurs, we are extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the victims,” he said when met at the launch of the Combat Shooting Club at Combat Baze in Kuala Lumpur.

Two naval helicopters collided mid-air this morning during a rehearsal session at the Royal Malaysian Navy stadium in Lumut, Perak.

According to the navy, all 10 people on board the two aircraft - three in a HOM (M503-3) helicopter, and seven in a Fennec (M502-6) chopper - were killed in the incident during a flyover training for the 90th Naval Day celebration, at 9.32am.

Possible cancellation

In a separate event, Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that his party is mulling whether to continue with the Naval Day celebrations after the tragic crash.

"I believe we will deliberate whether to continue with the celebration as the programme is organised by the navy," he told reporters after attending the Defence Ministry Raya Open House at Kem Kementah in the city.

The interim report of the chopper collision will be provided as soon as possible, he added without specifying the timeframe.

Khaled will visit the crash scene and has advised the public not to spread videos of the collision out of respect for the victims' families and to not disturb the investigation process.

Horrifying footage of the two helicopters colliding in mid-air, before plunging to the ground, is making its rounds on social media.

Following the crash, the HOM (M503-3) helicopter plunged onto the staircase of the navy stadium, while the other chopper ended up near the navy sports complex's swimming pool.

Both aircraft had taken off from the Sitiawan field at 9.03am, before the tragedy occurred. - Mkini
