Fact-check: Malaysiakini didn't publish article on Petronas-endorsed scheme

An article purported to be by Malaysiakini about an investment scheme endorsed by Petronas CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz is false.

The article published on the website crudeprofimy.com is likely a phishing scam, to dupe unsuspecting internet users to partake in a so-called investment scheme.

The website presents itself as an exact duplicate of the Malaysiakini website but has no relation to the news portal.

The news portal has also never produced articles quoting Tengku Muhammad Taufik endorsing the investment platform.

The investment platform, which claims to be owned by Petronas, is also a fake scheme.

On March 9, Petronas issued a statement debunking claims that its CEO had endorsed an investment scheme in an interview with The Star.

The purported article by The Star was falsified to appear like it was published by the English daily.

It was also accompanied by an AI-generated video of Tengku Muhammad Taufik endorsing the scheme.

Petronas said it lodged a police report on the matter.

The video, however, was still circulating on YouTube until last week.

YouTube has taken down the video after Malaysiakini's complaint, while the news portal has reported crudeprofimy.com as a phishing website via Google’s safe browsing platform.

The links and videos were found to be circulating on messaging app WhatsApp and other social media platforms. - Mkini
