MCA won't campaign for Harapan candidates in KKB polls

MCA will not campaign in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if a BN candidate is not fielded in the contest.

The decision was made during the party’s political development committee meeting at its headquarters today.

“Following discussions, the meeting unanimously decided that if the candidate is not from BN, MCA will not assist with any campaigning,” the party announced in a brief statement.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat fell vacant following the death of its DAP incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21.

Polling is slated to take place on May 11, while nomination day falls on April 27 and advance polling is on May 7.

BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said that BN would not seek to contest the seat and deferred to the coalition government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to decide on the candidate.

DAP is going over its shortlist of potential candidates, while the opposing Perikatan Nasional coalition is also deciding on its own candidate.

However, Zahid’s statement received a rebuke from Selangor MCA Youth, who accused him of making the decision without consulting other BN component parties.

It argued that an MCA candidate should contest the seat.

MCA previously held the state constituency until the 2013 general election, when Lee won the seat for DAP and successfully defended it in two subsequent elections. - Mkini
