'I'm still loyal to Umno despite criticism of party' - Zafrul

Umno supreme council member Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz stressed that he remains loyal to the party despite previously criticising the leadership of Selangor Umno.

The investment, trade, and industry minister explained that he just wanted to ensure that Selangor Umno rises and remains relevant in gaining the support of the people in the state.

"I am still loyal to Umno. My criticism was constructive because I want to see Umno continue to be relevant in Selangor and continue to collaborate since we are a unity government, so we need to be in line with the federal.

"Selangor Umno also needs to embrace the spirit of the unity government; what we do at the federal level must also be done in Selangor," he said after the launching ceremony of the Multi-Code Electronics Industries (M) Berhad construction site in Serendah today.

On April 6, Zafrul claimed that the lack of certain qualities in Selangor Umno was why he resigned as the party’s state treasurer.

The Umno Kota Raja chief stated that the state party had recorded poor results, starting with the 15th general election in 2022, followed by the state election about a year later.

Zafrul said these results serve as a final warning for Umno Selangor to change and recognise the reality.

"It has been eight months since the state election, and still nothing.

"No thorough post-mortem. No new strategies to win the people’s hearts," he said.

‘Isolated and outdated’

Zafrul further said that if his views on immediate change are not accepted, it would be more appropriate for him to resign from the state-level position to focus on the central level and the Kota Raja division he leads.

However, Zafrul's statement was contested by the state Umno information chief Mohd Zaidi Md Zain, who described it as isolated and outdated.

Therefore, Zaidi said Zafrul should stop making statements that could embarrass himself and confuse many parties, especially Umno members.

Meanwhile, Zafrul said he would participate in campaigning for the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

"I will campaign in the by-election and meet with the state division leaders. There will be meetings to support the government's candidate," he added. - Mkini
