Jakim launches 24-hour hotline to report insults against Islam

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has launched a 24-hour hotline for the public to report any incidents of “insults to Islam”, including on social media.

Jakim said complaints can be made to 017-323 4533 via WhatsApp or through email at aduan@islam.gov.my.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Islamic affairs, Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, said the initiative is a collaboration between Jakim, state religious departments, police, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

He said this is important to ensure action can be taken on the complaints made to the hotline.

“So it has to be collaborative. This means complaints can be made immediately and Jakim with the relevant agencies can take urgent action,” he was reported as saying by RTM.

This comes following several high-profile cases where prominent brands and individuals were accused of insulting Islam through the products that they carried or via social media commentary.

It includes convenience store chain KK Mart which is now facing legal proceedings after several pairs of socks with the word Allah printed on them were found in an outlet in Selangor.

Two social media users were also sentenced to jail for postings regarding the issue after pleading guilty.

One of them, Chiok Wai Leong, had his conviction dropped after the court found the guilty plea was not properly recorded.

He was charged again and this time, pleaded not guilty. - Mkini
