KUALA LUMPUR: All flights bound for Sarawak have returned to their normal schedules yesterday following the Gunung Ruang volcanic eruption on May 1.
The matter was confirmed by Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin.
Lee, in a statement, said the resumption of services has reflected the efficiency and cooperation between airlines and the relevant authorities in managing unforeseen situations.
On May 1, a total of 24 inbound and outbound flights from Sarawak involving Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air were cancelled as a result of volcanic activity in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The cancellation affected some 3,451 passengers in numerous locations, including Kuching, Miri, Sibu, and Bintulu.
He said Gunung Ruang's eruption posed potential risks to air travel, prompting the airlines' swift decision in order to safeguard the passengers' safety.
He added that the ministry will remain vigilant and work closely with other authorities, such as the Meteorological Department, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), as well as various airlines.
"Passengers' safety and security remain the utmost priority, and we will continue to monitor the situation. Affected passengers are encouraged to reach out to their respective airlines for the latest updates," he said.
He also extended his gratitude to the public for their understanding and cooperation during this time. - NST
