PETALING JAYA: A 13-year-old secondary schoolgirl in Kota Kinabalu made up a story of being kidnapped so that she could skip a religious class, according to police.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Kasim Muda said the girl was found wandering alone in a shopping mall instead of attending the class.

“Police found that the story of her being kidnapped was made up because she was unwilling to attend a Quran recitation class,” he said in a statement.

Yesterday, a Facebook post containing a photo and statement of a girl who was allegedly a victim of a kidnapping case went viral.

In the post, a user claimed that a 13-year-old student from Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru said she had been kidnapped but managed to escape.

Kasim said the girl was returned to her parents and was advised against repeating such behavior.

“Members of the public, particularly teenagers, are advised not to make up crime-related stories that can cause panic,” he said, emphasising that a false report is an offence.

Such an act will cause inconvenience to the police, wasting their time and effort to carry out an investigation, he added. - FMT
