Double cheer as Sze Fei-Izzuddin, Wei Chong-Kai Wun storm into last eight

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani fought back from a game down to beat Indonesians Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin and reach the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at the Indonesia Open.

PETALING JAYA: Despite the nation’s top men’s doubles pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik being knocked out of the Indonesia Open today, Malaysian supporters still have something to cheer about after the country’s two other men’s doubles pairs progressed to the quarter-finals.

Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun made it a double joy with their victories, adding to national singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao’s superb march to the last eight in his category.

Earlier, Aaron-Wooi Yik were sent packing after losing tamely to the Chinese Taipei duo of Lu Ching Yao-Yang Po Han 21-16, 21-14 at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno Indoor Stadium in Jakarta.

Later in the day, world No 13 Sze Fei-Izzuddin proved their mettle by fighting back from a game down to beat Indonesians Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin 16-21, 21-16, 21-12 in 59 minutes.

This was their second win against the world No 14 pair in their two meetings after last beating them at the 2022 Swiss Open.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin will face the winners of the match between Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan and China’s Liang Weikang-Wang Chang.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun showed a glimpse of their quality at the world stage when they defeated Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard of Denmark 21-18, 19-21, 21-12 to progress to tomorrow’s quarter-finals.

The first two games were evenly contested, but the Malaysians took complete control in the rubber to seal the win.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun will take on the Taiwanese pair of Ching Yao-Po han for a place in the semi-finals.

In the women’s doubles, Malaysia’s top-ranked pair of Pearly Tan-M Thinaah are also through to the last eight after defeating Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti 21-18, 21-19.

Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing progressed to the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles competition with a 15-21, 23-21, 21-14 win over Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje. - FMT
