PETALING JAYA: A kuih seller has claimed trial in the magistrates’ court in George Town to intentionally causing the death of a cat last week.

Faizul Azlan Ridzuan, 47, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Nadratun Naim Saidi.

He was accused of causing the feline’s death by placing it in a gunny sack before tossing it into a river along Jalan Kota Giam, Jelutong, at 8.30am on May 31.

According to Harian Metro, the charge was framed under Section 428 of the Penal Code which carries a punishment of imprisonment for up to two years or a fine or both, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor M Darrshini requested bail of RM7,000. However, a defence lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation asked for a reduction as Faizul only earns RM1,500 a month and has one dependent.

The magistrate set bail at RM6,000 in one surety and scheduled July 18 for re-mention.
