PETALING JAYA: A renowned chartered professional body for management and leadership based in the UK said it was questioned by the higher education ministry recently over allegations it was “selling unaccredited certificates” which are not recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) said members of its regional board – comprising volunteers drawn from industry and higher education, including CEOs, directors, and the deans of several Malaysian universities – were questioned on April 30 over the matter.
“(CMI) had to issue a comprehensive letter of explanation to the ministry on May 2,” it said in a court filing last week.
CMI also said its Malaysian partners in higher education have “opted to suspend their commercial relationship”, leaving it at risk of losing “business opportunities” valued at £1.5 million (RM9 million).
It also said representatives from both CMI and its subsidiary, CMI Management & Leadership Sdn Bhd (CMI-ML), have been met with queries by their Malaysian partners, “including pertaining to the potential discontinuance of the services”.
None of the partners was identified by name.
The assertions were contained in a statement of claim filed in a defamation suit initiated by CMI and CMI-ML against a prominent academic and a journalist.
Addressing the non-accreditation allegation, CMI said it does not need MQA recognition because it is “a regulated awarding body itself, which accredits degree courses in Malaysia that are already accredited by the MQA”.
“(CMI’s) mapping process considers whether learners can demonstrate that they will meet the assessment requirements through knowledge, understanding or skills gained through the validated higher education programme of study, and whether the university’s own programme assessment methodology covers (CMI’s) requirements.
“As such, (CMI), in according such qualifications, does not need a separate assessment,” the statement of claim read.
It also said CMI-ML “provides a modest support operation on the ground in Malaysia”, with a majority of services performed by CMI “digitally” and “remotely”. - FMT
