Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor’s special officer, Sazalye Donol, has called for an immediate halt to the ongoing controversy surrounding the birthday celebration of state governor Musa Aman.
Sazalye emphasised that the celebration is fully in line with the Sabah state constitution and does not breach any laws.
He firmly stated that the state government, under Hajiji’s leadership, has committed no wrongdoing, procedural error, or misuse of funds in organising the event.
“On the contrary, efforts have been made to ensure cost savings in a transparent and prudent manner.
“Therefore, the implementation of the governor’s birthday celebration for 2025 is in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Sabah state constitution,” he added in a statement.
Sazalye was responding to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student group activist Aliff Danial, who urged for the birthday celebration to be cancelled.

Referencing Musa’s previous corruption charges, the activist said public funds should be channelled towards solving problems in the state instead.
‘Possible contempt’
However, the chief minister’s aide cautioned that Aliff’s remarks amounted to a serious insult and an unfounded accusation, potentially constituting contempt toward the governor.
“Based on analysis and comparison, I am of the opinion that previous birthday celebrations for governors involved far more activities and incurred higher costs compared to this year.
“For example, in 2024, a total of 12 programmes or activities were listed. Taking into account various factors such as cost savings and other considerations, the number of programmes or activities has been reduced to only seven this year,” he pointed out.
Sazalye noted that high-cost activities such as “big bike” events and golf tournaments have been scrapped while more meaningful and essential programmes - such as celebrations for orphans, religious ceremonies, and public parades - have been preserved for the benefit of the people.
“Therefore, I urge that all criticism regarding the birthday celebration be stopped, with the hope that this statement clarifies the confusion that has arisen,” he added. - Mkini
