GEORGE TOWN: A crane at a construction site is believed to have slipped before toppling over and blocking a road near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bayan Lepas here today, causing traffic disruptions and congestion.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of fire operations, John Sagun Francis, said they received an emergency call at 9.10am, and the first fire engine from the Bayan Baru fire and rescue station was dispatched to the scene.

"The incident involved a crane that reportedly slipped at a construction site in the area before toppling over and obstructing the main road.

"Only the crane operator sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. No other victims were involved," he said in a statement today.

He said the crane was removed with the assistance of two privately owned cranes, and the clearance operation was completed by around 1.30pm. The fire brigade also conducted oil spill cleaning in the affected area. - FMT
