MIRROR, mirror on the wall, who is the most racist of them all?
Perhaps this is not so much about being a racist in contrast to feeling oneself as much superior, hence the entitled attitude as the the Edward Wong academic saga has proven.
While plenty of online commenters have played the race card to convey their stance on Wong being despondent at not being offered entry into Universiti Malaya’s accounting course despite his CGPA of 4.0 and a near perfect 99% for extra-curricular activities, the frank confession by Yeldrim (@yeldrim2544) on X caught the eyes of many.
“People forget the sinister idea behind all of these: Malaysian Chinese will never accept the fact that Malays can academically surpass them,” proffered the presumably Chinese poster in reaction to news that Wong was eventually offered a full scholarship by UTAR and TAR UMT after his woes caught the attention of MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.
“This is why they cause this ruckus. I know this because many of my Chinese relatives regurgitate these talking points every CNY (Chinese New Year).”
The post which has already generated 1.3M views at time of publication also threw in the accusation that some Chinese were pro-Zionist and inherently racist towards Malays.

As recently highlighted on social media, there has been plenty of attacks on the hapless Wong and by extension Chinese students, accusing them of having “entitled” attitude. Below is one example which attempted to trace the origin of such mentality:

Some commenters were of the opinion that the Chinese were just plain racist and that they have been peddling this narrative ad nauseum despite being the economically dominant group in the country.

However, there are those who dismissed this idea that the Chinese are racist. To question the admission systems is NOT racist in itself given that many view the process as antiquated and open to systemic bias.
One called for greater transparency in the admission process to avoid such scenarios.

In fact, the post by social media marketing specialist pudynazyn (@pudynzayn) which was referenced by Yeldrim also contained plenty racially-tinged remarks with one commenter claiming even the “Chinese needed a crutch” while another contended that it was unfair for lower grade Malay students to be offered scholarships.

The inherent unfairness in the admission exams was also hotly debated with one remarking one cannot compare “apples with rotten bananas” while another countered that “there should be only once entrance exam” (currently STPM pupils have to compete for limited places with their so-called Matrikulasi/Asasi peers).

Speaking of “one entrance exam”, one self-proclaimed history and geopolitics fan hit out at the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth’s (UMANY) for having mooted the abolishment of the Matriculation programme route to encourage a level playing field for all A-Level students.
Editor’s Note: UMANY has since apologised for its statement while alluding to its real intention which is to combine the matriculation programme with the STPM examination based on the STPM syllabus which is now widely recognised internationally
“Matrics this, Matrics that,” fumed SejaFi | #FreeOrPartition

“But nobody even dares to talk about racism In Form 6 (teacher sometimes speak Mandarin only), making ‘leftover Meleis’ (Meleis who don’t get Matrics, Diploma, Asasi) having to run to Polytechnic or else they’ll fail big time in STPM due to racism.”
However, the poster’s claim was disputed with one commenter aptly pointed out that the accusation that “STPM teachers speak Mandarin only” needs to be supported with evidence.
“Else, you’re just like others out there – all noise no substance. And you’re contributing to the disharmony. If you’ve proof, it warrants investigation by the authorities.”
