Dang Wangi police chief injured in standoff with Kg Sg Baru residents

KUALA LUMPUR: Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman was left injured in a scuffle with Kampung Sungai Baru residents following a court-ordered operation to demolish houses there today.

Sulizmie Affendy was seen with a bloodied face following an encounter with residents who were attempting to enter the area.

Police have asked residents to disperse.

Earlier, the operation, which was meant to facilitate the Kampung Sungai Baru redevelopment plan, turned tense residents demanded access to the area.

The operation was led by a court bailiff, with the cooperation of relevant agencies.

The residents had gathered at the site since early morning. At 10am, following a series of speeches by their representative, they tried to force their way into the area.

However, they were barred from doing so by policemen on duty.

Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel were then placed on standby.

Media personnel were barred from entering the operation area.

Located near the Kuala Lumpur city centre, Kampung Sungai Baru's redevelopment had been delayed for nine years.

Discussions began in 2016 on the planned redevelopment, which would involve building 328 residential units across 3.2-hectares.

Negotiations with residents ran from 2016 to 2020, followed by land acquisition and approvals, which were finalised in 2021.

The land acquisition involved 67 terraced houses and 14 apartment blocks.

However, problems began when a minority group expressed dissatisfaction with the developer's joint venture (JV) agreement and compensation.

A number had disagreed with the compensation rate of RM400 per square foot set by the Federal Territories Director of Lands and Mines Office.

Some residents have since refused to vacate the area, affecting the redevelopment work. - NST
