PUTRAJAYA: The Sessions Court here today fixed three days in December for the trial of singer and actor Naim Daniel, who has been charged with committing physical sexual assault against a teenager.

Judge Datin M. Kunasundary set Dec 15, 16 and 18 for the hearing during case management proceedings involving the 28-year-old celebrity this morning.

She also fixed Oct 17 to hear the prosecution's application for the victim to testify via video link.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Khadijah Amir Hamdzah appeared for the prosecution, while Naim, whose full name is Muhammad Naim Daniel Baharin, was represented by lawyers Mohd Irwan Sumadi and Datuk Amirul Ridzuan.

Irwan told reporters that the defence opposed the prosecution's application for the victim to give evidence via video link.

"We have made a formal application for the court to set a date for submissions so both parties can present their arguments.

"During the trial, the victim will no longer be under 18 years old, so the proceedings should be conducted in the usual manner," he said.

On June 17, Naim pleaded not guilty to a charge of committing physical sexual assault on the 17-year-and-seven-month-old girl at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at 8.56pm on May 19.

The charge, framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and whipping upon conviction. - NST
