Loke: Licences expired under 3 years still qualify for RON95 subsidy

Those with a driving licence that has expired for no more than three years will still be eligible for the RON95 subsidy scheme, which takes effect on Sept 30.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said such Competent Driving Licences (CDL) are still considered active.

“In the definition of a valid driving licence, they would have renewed it, and such licences are considered active. Active licences also include those not yet renewed but expired for no more than three years.

“Those are deemed active in our system. Any licence that has not been renewed for more than three years is considered inactive, and its holder will not be entitled to the RON95 subsidy,” he told a press conference at his ministry in Putrajaya today.

The minister noted that based on the latest records from the Road Transport Department (RTD), a total of 15 million driving licences are still active.

From the figure, 925,421 CDL holders have yet to renew their licences after they expired less than three years ago.

“CDL holders whose licences are still active, including those whose licences have expired for not more than three years, are urged to renew their driving licences immediately,” Loke said.

He also cautioned that those who fail to renew their driving licences for more than three years will be required to sit for the driving test again.

On Monday (Sept 22), Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the government will be subsidising RON95 petrol only for Malaysians, with the targeted subsidy scheme dubbed the Budi Madani RON95 programme (Budi95).

Budi95 enables all Malaysians with a valid driving licence to buy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre, with a monthly limit of 300 litres. Anwar said e-hailing drivers will be exempted from the cap.

Foreigners driving locally registered vehicles will pay the market price for RON95, estimated to be around RM2.60 per litre.

Foreign-registered vehicles will still be limited to RON97.

The scheme is scheduled to be implemented in stages, with the armed forces and police first to get the subsidies on Sept 27, followed by Rahmah Cash Aid recipients on Sept 28, before a full rollout on Sept 30. - Mkini
