KUALA PILAH: The latest developments in several high-profile corruption cases, including those involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Op Sikaro, and senior management of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), will be announced this Tuesday by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said all updates on these cases would be shared at a press conference. He added that many pending corruption cases, including some from last year, still need to be updated.

"I will announce the latest developments in several delayed high-profile corruption cases, including Op Sikaro, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, DBKL, and others. My press conference will be on Sept 9. Op Sikaro is still under investigation, and we are focusing on those who have benefited from illegal activities.

"My officers are still analysing hundreds of accounts, which is why I requested a delay to provide more accurate information," he told reporters today in Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan.

He was in the state to officiate the launch and handover of the Balai Raya Kampung Terentang Batu Kikir under the One Leader, One Village (Santuni Madani) programme.

Also present were his wife, Puan Sri Normah Mohd Zain, who is also MACC Puspanita chairman; Kuala Pilah District Deputy Land Administrator Akhmal Abu Basar; and Kampung Terentang chief Roslan Kassim.

Commenting further, Azam said the DBKL case investigation is complete and has been submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for review, with a recommendation for court prosecution soon.

"I hope the DBKL case can be prosecuted at the latest after Malaysia Day (Sept 16) or in the first week of next month," he said.

He added that the commission is making every effort to expedite all high-profile cases to avoid the public perceiving that the MACC is delaying investigations.

"The MACC always strives to accelerate investigation papers for each case, and most have already seen punitive action — not only prosecution in court or fines, but also internal departmental actions," he said.

Previously, the MACC's investigation into 14 licensed import companies under Op Sikaro found they had abused the system by making false declarations to evade taxes and import illegal goods.

MACC Special Operations Senior Director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin said the modus operandi included changing customs codes and product details to reduce actual tax payments.

In Ismail Sabri's case, the MACC seized cash amounting to about RM170 million in various foreign currencies and 16kg of gold bars valued at nearly RM7 million in March.

The items were seized from three premises, including a 'safehouse', linked to corruption and money laundering involving the former prime minister.

The MACC is also investigating property transactions connected to senior DBKL officers. - NST
