Anwar Ibrahim says the US president's visit will boost efforts to strengthen regional peace and stability.

Anwar said he spoke with Trump by telephone earlier today, during which he reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment as Asean chair to ensuring regional peace.
“Malaysia awaits president Trump’s attendance at the Asean Summit next month, which will serve as an important platform to strengthen cooperation for regional peace, stability and prosperity,” he said in a social media posting today.
Anwar had previously announced, following a phone call in July, that Trump would attend the summit.
However, several pro-Palestine activists and groups have since urged Anwar to cancel his invitation to Trump due to the latter’s staunch support for Israel.
Anwar said in today’s phone call, Trump recognised ‘success in brokering a ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, describing it as a “major achievement” that highlighted Malaysia’s credibility and Asean’s resilience.
“I also conveyed my appreciation to him for the role played by the US in ensuring the ceasefire was achieved,” he added. - FMT
