KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Banking Bhd's (Maybank) has denied claims that it will be removing its sign on the country's tallest building, Merdeka 118.
A Maybank spokesman told the New Straits Times that photos of the sign purportedly being removed were fake.
"So far, only the 'MAY' portion of the signage has been installed, and there is still a long way to go before the 'BANK' portion is added," the spokesman said.
The installation of the Maybank sign on Menara 118 has drawn backlash from social media users, with many claiming it was the "commercialisation" of a national landmark.
Some argued that the signage risks diluting the tower's national identity, leaving it overshadowed by corporate branding.
Others, however, dismissed the criticism, saying the signage would not diminish the tower's significance or purpose.
It was previously reported that Maybank would relocate its head office from Menara Maybank in Jalan Tun Perak to Merdeka 118 under a tenancy of up to 21 years.
As the anchor tenant, Maybank was granted naming and signage rights to the building. The bank will occupy 33 floors, housing about 5,900 employees. - NST
