FORMER premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged Sabah voters to prioritise good governance in the upcoming state election, warning that the state’s personality and ethnicity-driven politics continue to hinder the formation of an effective government.
Speaking on Sinar Daily‘s Top News Podcast, Dr Mahathir expressed concern that, despite serious issues ranging from corruption scandals involving state assemblymen to natural disasters and bullying cases, election outcomes in Sabah rarely reflect the quality of leadership or governance.
“They should be choosing a good government, but most of the time they don’t look at good governance. They look at individuals, at parties, and also at ethnic groups and such,” he said. “So, we will not get a good government as a result of elections.”
Dr Mahathir described Sabah’s political landscape as fragmented, saying the rush to form parties and alliances whenever an election is called has led to overcrowded contests and a divided electorate.
“As soon as there’s an election, everyone wants to set up a party, everyone wants to form an alliance, and individuals want to contest. What we will see in Sabah is that the people will be divided into many small factions,” he said. — Focus Malaysia
