A-GC reaffirms Najib's 1MDB sentences

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) has reaffirmed the High Court's sentencing of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial.

In a media statement, the A-GC said the High Court imposed a 15-year jail term for four charges of abuse of power, along with a total fine of RM11.39 billion.

For 21 money laundering charges, the court sentenced Najib to five years' imprisonment and a RM2.08 billion fine.

The AG-C said Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah delivered the verdict, finding Najib guilty of abuse of power under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and money laundering under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

"The court ordered that all custodial sentences are to run concurrently and will commence after the completion of Najib's imprisonment term for the SRC International case," the A-GC added.

Earlier today, Sequerah ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Najib is expected to file an appeal against the verdict on Monday. - NST
