Chang Yang, 23, was sentenced to four years and four months’ imprisonment for withdrawing over S$770,000 from ATMs, while Thong Yoong Khean, 27, who withdrew nearly S$660,000, received four years behind bars, reported the Straits Times.
Both pleaded guilty last month to one count each of engaging in a conspiracy to handle the benefits of criminal conduct, involving more than S$403,000 in total.
Other charges relating to remaining amounts were also considered during sentencing.
The men kept up to S$600 per withdrawal, with Chang earning approximately RM50,000 (S$16,100) and Thong around RM10,000.
Thong had previously taken an undisclosed loan and, struggling to repay it, was offered a “job opportunity” involving ATM cash withdrawals in Singapore, which led to his involvement in the syndicate.
Chang similarly borrowed RM100,000 and joined the operation under instructions from group chats on Telegram.
The men received detailed instructions on which ATMs to use, card details, one-time passwords, and locations, sometimes retrieving cards from a mall locker or via a delivery driver.
Withdrawals were conducted at various sites, including Orchard Road, Tiong Bahru, and Punggol, between May and December 2024, totalling over S$403,000. After taking their cut, the remaining cash was passed to a third party or taken back to Malaysia.
