LARUT: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has denied accusations labelling him a traitor following meetings with several political leaders, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Hamzah, who was recently sacked from Bersatu, added that meeting any leader, including those in government, should not be used as a reason to label someone a traitor.
"If I meet the prime minister (PM), does that make me a traitor?
"Meeting the PM is not a wrongdoing. I only want to continue the fight for religion, race and the nation, while ensuring the unity of Malays continues to be strengthened," he told reporters after presenting contributions to surau and mosques in his parliamentary constituency, Larut, Perak.
Earlier, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was reported to have disagreed with the idea of a new party linked to Hamzah joining Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Muhyiddin had also raised Hamzah's meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Umno president, which was linked to the so-called "Bangkok Move", as among the reasons for Hamzah being expelled from the party.
Meanwhile, Hamzah said he was unaware of the actual reason for the matter and questioned why meeting political leaders had become an issue.
"Why can't it be accepted? I don't know. Some say I'm a traitor because I met certain leaders.
"For me, what matters is our sincerity in fighting for religion, race and the nation," he said. - NST
