Another Quran desecration case, Sabah Umno urges action

Sabah Umno today urged authorities to take strong action against the perpetrator of another Quran desecration incident, which is believed to have occurred in the Borneo state.

This came after a netizen uploaded a photograph on the social media platform Threads showing a Quran being stepped on.

There was also a lewd sketch in the holy book that aimed at insulting Prophet Muhammad.

Angered by the incident, Sabah Umno secretary Samasuddin Yusop, in a statement, urged the police, the MCMC and state religious authorities to take strong action on the person responsible.

"As a state that is famous for its harmonious multicultural society, Sabah cannot afford to allow any act of provocation that can hurt religious sensitivities and disrupt public peace," said Samasuddin (above).

Malaysiakini has reached out to Sabah police and the MCMC for comments.

‘Defend the sanctity of religion’

Samasuddin also urged the public to remain calm and not to take matters into their own hands.

He said the public should give room for authorities to carry out their investigation in a fair and professional manner.

"We must defend the sanctity of religion while at the same time preserving the peace and unity that have long been Sabah’s strength.

"Sabah Umno stands firm in defending the honour of Islam and the sanctity of the Quran, while continuing to ensure that interfaith harmony in the state is preserved,” he said.

Earlier this month, a college student in Kuantan, Pahang, uploaded a similar image online.

He had since been charged with desecrating the Quran and posting offensive content on social media.

The accused, S Vikneswaran, 21, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. - Mkini
