'Beaten, electrocuted': Suspect in Cikgu Chandra attack claims tortured by cops

A man arrested in connection with the recent attack and arson case against social media personality S Chandrasegaran, better known as Cikgu Chandra, has accused the police of torturing him when in custody.

Malaysiakini learned that the 40-year-old tow-truck operator had lodged a police report on March 17, claiming that police beat him several times during interrogation at the Serdang district police headquarters.

He alleged that at least two cops used their footwear to beat him on the head, while one put a pencil between his toes and twisted it, causing severe pain.

"My hands that were handcuffed behind my back had been stepped on by several officers until I screamed in pain.

"At the same time, another cop stepped on both my legs, leaving marks that are still visible. I was also slapped once by an unidentified person.

"I was also electrocuted once on my right ear by a cop, whom I can't identify because my eyes were covered," he said in his report, which Malaysiakini has sighted.

The man claimed that cops tortured him to force a confession to the alleged crimes.

His lawyer, S Vinesh told Malaysiakini that the report was lodged in Subang Jaya soon after his client was released from police custody on Tuesday.

They are also planning to lodge a complaint with Suhakam, he added.

Cops probing allegations

Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar, when contacted, confirmed that police have received the man's report.

"Yes, I can confirm that police have received the report and we are investigating," he said in a text message.

The suspect was among 12 individuals that police have hauled up so far over incidents earlier this month involving Chandrasegaran.

On March 10, Malaysiakini reported that three of Chandrasegaran’s cars were set on fire in an early morning incident at his home.

A day before that, he uploaded a video claiming his house gate and car were damaged by masked individuals armed with machetes.

On March 17, Shazeli told a press conference that the 12 suspects aged between 30 and 40, including a woman, were arrested in several locations, including Banting, Subang, and Serdang between Thursday and Sunday.

According to Shazeli, police have identified seven of the suspects as having a direct connection to the incidents, including the mastermind. - Mkini
