KOTA KINABALU: Beef and chicken-based protein supply for Sabah is sufficient for Hari Raya Aidilfitri up to at least May this year, says the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sabah.
DVS director Dr Zul Bahar Abdul Rashid said the department was committed to ensuring a steady supply of the products for the festive season and the next few months.
“Based on calculations for up to the first five months of 2026, the local production of chicken can go over 29,916.65 metric tonnes, whereas for beef and buffalo meat, it is around 3,185 metric tonnes,” he said in a statement.
As a proactive approach to cater to any increase in demand during the festive season, the department has allowed for the import of products as early as December last year.
Asked about the recent seizure of frozen food at a storage unit in Penampang on March 3, Dr Zul said the produce was found to possess valid import licenses.
“Therefore, there is no confiscation of the over 542kg of frozen food under the Animal Enactment 2015,” he said.
He also assured the public that continued monitoring of supply and demand would be carried out to ensure the continuity of Sabah’s livestock industry. - Star
