A Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leader has rubbished accusations that his coalition has allocated 17 proposed new state seats to its component parties.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah insisted that the rumours have no standing as the seats have yet to be delineated by the Election Commission (EC).
“Suddenly, here come people saying that 10 seats are guaranteed for PBB, three for SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party), and so on.
“I don’t think PBB or SUPP has a stake that way, saying this is my seat. The seats have not been delineated. I don’t even know where the seats will be,” The Star quoted Karim as saying today.
His remarks were in response to a leaked document circulating online, which alleged that PBB would receive 10 of the new seats, while SUPP and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) would get three each, and the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) one.
The document also purportedly outlined proposed electoral boundaries for the additional state constituencies.
Karim added today that while it is up to the EC to determine the new seats, it is “not wrong” for parties to discuss potential areas for the new constituencies.
The EC must complete the delineation process by July 14, 2027.
Sunway University political scientist Wong Chin Huat previously highlighted that if the eventual map to be proposed by the EC looks similar to the one in the leaked document, then the EC would appear to be drawing the Sarawak electoral map in “accordance with GPS’ instructions”.
“If that is the case, has the EC, as a public institution, been weaponised by private players (GPS) to pursue their private interests?
“Would this then warrant another royal commission of inquiry (RCI), not just on the Sarawak delineation process, but also on the governance and operation of the EC?” he questioned. - Mkini
