PETALING JAYA:
A trial of the vehicle access management system (VAMS) is underway at the KLIA Terminal 2 following the system’s successful rollout at Terminal 1 last year.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said the trial run for Terminal 2, which ends on March 30, covers both departure and arrival kerbsides.

The system introduces timed vehicle entry and exit through automated barrier gates, and charges will apply to vehicles that exceed the permitted time limit once the trial period ends.

MAHB managing director Izani Ghani said the second phase of the VAMS rollout, at Terminal 2, reflects the firm’s continued focus on elevating service excellence at KLIA.

“By improving kerbside traffic flow and ensuring better vehicle turnover, the system supports a smoother and safer experience for passengers and those sending them off or picking them up, particularly as travel demand continues to grow,” he said in a statement.

VAMS provides a 10-minute grace period for vehicles dropping off or picking up passengers.

Terminal 2 records about 16,000 vehicle movements daily at its kerbsides, and the trial will help determine operational adjustments before enforcement begins.

According to MAHB, the system recorded a significant reduction in kerbside congestion since its implementation at Terminal 1.

It said that less than 1% of vehicles overstayed beyond the allowable period, equivalent to approximately 194 out of 43,000 vehicles daily.

Under the VAMS at Terminal 1, a 10-minute grace period is provided, after which penalties from RM10 to a maximum of RM100 will be incurred, depending on the duration of overstay. Payments can be made via Touch ‘n Go, credit card or MyDebit.

For drivers requiring more time, several alternatives are available including the short-term car park (15 minutes free), long-term car park (30 minutes free), and designated free KLIA public waiting area. - FMT
