Lawyer cries foul over bruises on suspect in Cikgu Chandra attack

A lawyer has urged police to investigate what happened to his client, who came to court with injury marks after spending a day in Serdang police custody.

According to S Vinesh, his client was in good health when arrested on Saturday to facilitate an investigation into an attack and arson case against social media personality S Chandrasegaran, better known as “Cikgu Chandra”.

However, the 40-year-old tow-truck operator had bruises on his limbs and appeared to be in a "very weak" condition when the suspect was taken to the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court the next morning (Sunday) for a remand application hearing.

"My question as his lawyer is just one: how could my client, who appeared in good health when he was arrested and brought to court for remand extension procedure (on Saturday), turn into someone who could barely walk, with bruises on his head, hands, and legs?

"On top of this, he also had difficulty breathing. What happened to him during that one day?

"We are not blaming the police, but we want to know what happened to him. We want the police to investigate who could have caused this, and why he was not rushed to the hospital immediately," the counsel told Malaysiakini.

Vinesh (above) said police detained his client under Section 435 of the Penal Code (mischief by fire) to facilitate the probe into an arson case at Cikgu Chandra's house, and initially received a two-day remand order.

The authorities brought the man to court on Sunday to seek an extension, but Vinesh said the magistrate denied the police application and ordered that the man be taken to the hospital for medical examination instead.

Despite this, the lawyer said police detained his client again to facilitate another probe under Section 427 of the Penal Code - mischief that causes damage to property - also related to attacks on the social media influencer.

Medical attention sought

The suspect's wife has also lodged a police report yesterday over the man's condition, and pleaded for the authorities to allow him medical attention.

In the report, which Malaysiakini sighted, the housewife said her husband has several health conditions, including high blood pressure, gastric issues, and sometimes faces difficulty in breathing.

"I hope this matter will be taken seriously by the relevant authorities, and if anything were to happen to him, the police have to be held responsible," she said.

Malaysiakini has reached out to Serdang district police chief Farid Ahmad and Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar for comment.

Farid confirmed that police have received the housewife's report, but declined to comment further and asked Malaysiakini to refer to Shazeli instead.

Vinesh's client was among the 12 individuals police have hauled so far over incidents earlier this month involving Chandrasegaran.

Set on fire

On March 10, Malaysiakini reported that three of Chandrasegaran’s cars were set on fire in an early morning incident at his home.

A day before that, he uploaded a video claiming his house gate and car were damaged by masked individuals armed with machetes.

This morning, Shazeli told a press conference that the 12 suspects aged between 30 and 40, including a woman, were arrested in several locations, including Banting, Subang and Serdang between Thursday and Sunday (yesterday).

According to Shazeli, police have identified seven of the suspects as having a direct connection to the incidents, including the mastermind.

"Seven suspects are still being held to facilitate investigation, while five others have been released on police bail.

"With the arrests, we have also caught the main suspect who planned the incidents. Investigation also established that the incidents were motivated by their dissatisfaction and hurt feelings," he said, as quoted by Harian Metro. - Mkini
