KUCHING: Sarawak's iconic layer cake is a staple for Aidilfitri, but one version is drawing attention with a hefty RM1,800 price tag per tray.

Known as "Kek Lapis Sultan", the premium creation by Abg K'ju Cake House is among the most expensive on the market.

Its creator, Adhar Brahim, 38, said the price reflects the use of premium ingredients and the meticulous, time-consuming process required to produce the cake.

"In terms of ingredients, technique, and preparation time, everything is at a premium level. Each layer is crafted with extreme care to ensure the texture and taste are perfectly balanced," he said when met here.

Adhar, who views his creation as a work of art rather than just a dessert, said the process takes over eight hours from mixing to the final bake.

He noted that the cake is highly sensitive to temperature and timing, requiring significant skill to ensure even layers and consistent texture.

To achieve the premium flavour, Adhar uses Wijsman butter, imported dried fruits, and specially selected nuts.

"The combination of these ingredients provides a richer taste and gives the Kek Lapis Sultan its unique identity," he said.

Each tray weighs more than five kg. While a full tray costs RM1,800, it is also available in half-trays for RM910, loaf sizes for RM310, and half-loaves for RM160. For those wishing to sample the cake, "bite-sized" pieces are sold at RM9.50 each.

Production is limited to 200 trays to maintain exclusivity.

Addressing the price, Adhar said his loyal customers understand the quality involved.

"Some joke that I want to get rich quickly or 'go to haj and back in a day'. But regular customers do not mind paying for it," he said. - NST
