KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution told the High Court today that millions of ringgit channelled into Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia would not have been received if Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had not been both the party president and prime minister at the material time.
Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin acknowledged that the funds involved in the case did not enter Muhyiddin's personal accounts but were instead deposited into Bersatu's accounts.
However, the lead prosecutor argued that Muhyiddin had an indirect interest in the Jana Wibawa programme as he was the party president and serving prime minister at the time.
He said this in his opening statement on the first day of the trial before Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin here today.
Wan Shaharuddin also told the court that evidence would show the then finance minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, had merely acted based on minutes issued by Muhyiddin.
He said neither Zafrul nor his political allies in Umno had gained any benefit from the transactions.
"We will also show that the then finance minister merely acted based on minutes issued by the accused and did not gain any benefit from taking such action.
"Likewise, the finance minister's ally at the time, Umno, also did not receive any benefit," he said.
Muhyiddin was charged in 2023 with allegedly abusing his position to solicit RM232.5 million in bribes for Bersatu from Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd, Nepturis Sdn Bhd, Mamfor Sdn Bhd and Datuk Azman Yusoff.
He also faces three money laundering charges involving RM200 million allegedly received from Bukhary Equity and deposited into Bersatu's accounts at AmBank and CIMB Bank. - NST
