TAIPING: The Education Ministry (MoE) has recorded a total of 398,671 registrations for Year One admission in 2027 as of March 9, says Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh.
He said 338,714 of the registrations were for seven-year-old students, while 59,957 were for six-year-olds.
"By the end of this month, we will have the final registration figures, which will allow us to verify the actual demand and determine which schools require additional classrooms.
"That does not mean we have no plans in place. For schools with a history of higher enrolment, we have already prepared our preliminary mapping, which will be finalised by the end of this month," he said at the MoE's Jaulah Ramadan Programme press conference at Maahad Al-Tarbiah, Al-Islamiah Government-Aided Religious School here today.
Meanwhile, Wong said the recruitment of 20,000 new Grade DG9 Education Service Officers on contract this month was a short-term measure to meet the anticipated increase in Year One students in 2027.
He said that the recruitment targeted university graduates without professional education qualifications, aiming to ensure schools had adequate teaching staff to accommodate additional pupils.
Wong said the measure was in preparation for a "double cohort" situation, when six-year-old pupils begin entering Year One in 2027.
"We expect a double cohort, but in terms of infrastructure, classrooms and teacher availability, we are fully prepared," he added. - NST
