KUALA LUMPUR: Jelutong member of parliament (MP) RSN Rayer has urged the government to enforce the law agaist activist Tamim Dahri Abdul Razak who allegedly desecrated a sacred Hindu religious symbol trident.

"The Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Ismail have an obligation to enforce the law and explain to the public what action has been taken so far. Why the delay?" he said.

Tamim's action has "angered" the country's minority Indian population with multiple police reports lodged, the lawmaker said.

Rayer called on authorities to enforce the law after a viral video showed a man allegedly desecrating a sacred Hindu trident at a Langkawi temple.

The authorities must explain why no arrests or charges have been made so far despite the video evidence and the number of police reports lodged, he said.

Rayer said that any delay in arresting and charging Tamim would be perceived as a double standard in the enforcement of the law.

Tamim, who has led a campaign against what he claims are illegally built Hindu temples, denied deliberately desecrating the object.

He said he did not realise the item he stepped on was a trident, claiming he mistook it for a rusty piece of metal.

Tamim said he had travelled to Langkawi to relieve work stress and went to feed monkeys at a nearby cave when he noticed a sharp steel rod and accidentally stepped on it.

He added that he did not think the object was a religious symbol, believing the location was not a temple.

Hindu activists challenged his explanation, saying the area clearly indicates the presence of a temple.

They stated the trident belongs to the Langkawi Shree Muniswarar Alayam temple and pointed out that a prominent signboard identifies the land as temple property. - NST
