GEORGE TOWN: Penang Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid, arrived at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office this morning.
His visit is understood to be in connection with an investigation into the alleged abuse of zakat funds.
The Proton X70 carrying Mohamad entered the MACC compound along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah at about 9.40am.
He was accompanied by an aide as he entered the building.
The MACC probe began after a state assemblyman raised the issue in the State Legislative Assembly at the end of last year.
Last month, the MACC obtained relevant documents for review as part of the investigation.
Penang MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy said the investigation aims to verify the matter and determine whether any wrongdoing or governance issues occurred.
Mohamad previously told the New Straits Times that allegations over the zakat fund investigation were politically motivated.
He added that he was ready to assist in the probe.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has dismissed calls for Mohamad to step aside following the investigation. - NST
