KOTA BARU: Police have received two reports involving women in Kelantan who allegedly remarried before their divorces were confirmed by the state religious authorities.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the reports were lodged by the women's first husbands.

He said the reports were made separately in Bachok and Kota Baru between the end of last year and last month.

"The issue arose because some of them were in the process of divorce but had yet to obtain confirmation from the religious department.

"All the cases have been referred to the state religious department and we (the police) consider the matter settled," he said.

Yusoff was commenting on the issue of local women who re-married in Kelantan or in Thailand but were unable to produce official divorce certificates.

Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council deputy president Abdul Aziz Che Mamat has revealed that a growing number of Malaysian women, including those from Kelantan, have falsified documents in order to remarry in southern Thailand.

He added the council was concerned over cases where women allegedly misrepresented their marital status when applying to marry for a second time.

He said some of them signed sworn declarations claiming they had divorced their first husbands despite being unable to produce official divorce certificates.

"Recently, the Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council — one of the popular places for Malaysian couples to solemnise marriages — has viewed seriously the issue of Malaysian women whose claimed that they have divorced from their first husbands, coming here to remarry.

"Most of them marry Malaysian men, while some marry foreign nationals.

"Problems arose when the women's first husbands admitted that the couples had not actually divorced," he added. - NST
