Thief caught redirecting Ramadan QR payments to his own wallet

NOW THAT most monetary transactions are done online, how fairs the robbers who used to make a living by stealing physical cash?

Tough times call upon human ingenuity, and while we hate to say it, the adage, “When there is a will, there is a way,” is very much appropriate for the situation.

Recently, a netizen gained quite the attention for highlighting an innovative technique used by a thief to steal money at the Ramadhan Bazaar.

From the video, a QR code could be seen adhered atop the QR code of a vendor. The motive was obvious, to redirect digital payments into another person’s e wallet.

“This is why I usually check the vendor’s name on the QR and the name in the QR on my phone. If it is weird, I will ask the vendor myself,” said netizen @sebulatbulan who was following the post on X.

“Crazy. I never thought about such a way to steal. Smart but at the wrong place,” added @ajmal_hadi.

Another netizen mentioned that he had seen such a method used somewhere in a Tamil film. The comment section was also filled with racist and stereotypical comments from ugly Malaysians.

Then there was @iamHaflinger suggesting that vendors use a machine that announces when money has entered their digital wallet.

But is this novel technique so useful? Firstly it was very obvious since the vendor and customer could see the QR code right on top of the former.

Second, the name of the account holder is shown when scanned, which makes it easy for the authorities to trace and catch the culprit.

Perhaps this is why it is not being adopted by the other thieves out there. Towards this thought, netizen @Fikrilakbar suggested that people scan the QR and transfer only 10 sen. They will then write the word, “scammer” there in the remark section, prompting the account to get locked up.

Sounds hilarious, but we think there are many other ways to publish the thief besides sending money to his or her account. — Focus Malaysia
