Business as usual for N Sembilan ruler, lectures netizens, those with rank about responsibilities

It was business as usual for Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, as he officiated the first state legislative assembly meeting of the year.

The Yang di-Pertuan Besar, who is under pressure from the state’s four ruling chieftains - the Undang Yang Empat - to resign, addressed those with positions and internet users in his speech.

“I wish to raise a matter that is important to Negeri Sembilan, aimed especially at individuals who have been given positions and rank which comes with great responsibilities.

“All actions and decisions must be based on facts and related information. I stress that all actions and decisions must be based on guidelines and laws that have been set.

“Don’t ever take any actions influenced by desires and emotions,” the ruler said.

Tuanku Muhriz’s remarks come days after the Undang Yang Empat moved to depose him.

The undangs - who have powers based on the state constitution to appoint and depose a ruler - claimed the decision was after an investigation into Tuanku Muhriz found transgressions that besmirched the royal institution.

Meanwhile, Tuanku Muhriz also reminded social media users to comment responsibly.

“To netizens, I urge that each comment on an issue be made responsibly and with deep understanding. Don’t be quick to trust and spread news without proper investigation and verification.

“Irresponsible and hasty behaviour in spreading information can have a negative impact on society and the state,” he said.

‘State govt must continue to function’

Earlier, the ruler also said that despite the absence of the Undang Yang Empat territorial chieftains and the Tunku Besar Tampin customary leader from today’s ceremony, the state administration must continue functioning.

“Even though there is the absence of nobles who usually accompany me at each officiating of the legislative meeting, this situation does not impact the legitimacy and continuity of the meeting.

“As such, the state government must continue to function as usual to ensure orderly administrative continuity, as well as safeguard the people’s interest,” Tuanku Muhriz said in his royal address.

The Undang Yang Empat announced in a statement last night that they would not attend the opening ceremony of the state assembly.

They also called for the assembly to be postponed, pointing to their decision to “sack” Tuanku Muhriz last week.

The undang for Sungai Ujong, Mubarak Thahak, however, was not invited to the ceremony as he was considered to have been sacked.

It was reported earlier that the Negeri Sembilan Council of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and the Ruling Chiefs (Dewan Keadilan dan Undang) accepted a move by Sungai Ujong nobles and clansfolk to sack Mubarak over purported transgressions.

The council includes the state ruler, the four undangs, and Tunku Besar Tampin.

The four chieftains for the luak (territories) of Sungai Ujong, Jelebu, Johol, and Rembau are vested with powers to elect and depose the state’s ruler - the Yang di-Pertuan Besar or Yamtuan Besar.

On Sunday, the Undang Yang Empat held a meeting after which they made two proclamations - to remove Tuanku Muhriz as Yang di-Pertuan Besar, and for Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar to be installed as the next ruler with immediate effect.

The Undang Yang Empat, along with the Tunku Besar Tampin, were absent during proceedings at the state assembly building today, where Tuanku Muhriz inspected a guard of honour.

During the ceremony, a group of about 20 handed a memorandum to an officer from the menteri besar’s office declaring their support and loyalty to Tuanku Muhriz. - Mkini
