Federal govt agencies, GLCs to work from home from April 15: PM

Federal ministries, government agencies, statutory bodies, and government-linked bodies will implement work-from-home policies beginning April 15, amid the global energy crisis brought on by the fighting in West Asia.

“The aim is to reduce fuel consumption and ensure a sustainable energy supply,” said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a special address tonight.

Details of the policy, which was decided at a cabinet meeting today, will be announced in the future.

He said in his conversations with the leaders of Iran, Turkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and other Gulf states, all of them agreed that the situation will get worse before it gets better.

The Malaysian government is spending RM4 billion per month to mitigate the impact of the crisis, and Petronas has helped ensure there will be sufficient oil and gas supplies until at least May.

“But, there is a limit to our abilities. Just look at the experience of other countries.

“So, if there are good ideas from amongst the traders, fishers, and workers, please put them forward. The Economic Action Council, relevant committees, and the cabinet are meeting every day.

“We - including myself - are calling representives including small contractors, fishers, and farmers, to hear their grievances and try to help where we can,” he said.

Anwar also chastised those who disseminated misinformation about the price of fuel and other goods. He urged the police and the MCMC to crack down on them, and for the people to be more discerning in seeking the correct information.

Earlier today, the Pahang government announced that its employees will work from home for two days per week, starting next week.

The Negeri Sembilan government said it is studying the idea, while Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said there is no pressing need for his government to follow suit for now. - Mkini
