N Sembilan chieftains boycott state assembly ceremony, reiterate call for ruler change

Negeri Sembilan’s territorial chieftains have called for the postponement of the state legislative assembly opening ceremony scheduled this morning until a new ruler is properly appointed.

In a joint statement, the four chieftains known as Undang Yang Empat, together with the Tunku Besar of Tampin, cited their decision to “sack” the Negeri Sembilan Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir last week.

They claimed Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun has no choice but to respect their authority, which is invoked under the Federal Constitution and the Negeri Sembilan Constitution.

"Therefore, we decree that the menteri besar shall comply and obey, and shall not act beyond the scope of the powers as provided," said the statement issued just before midnight.

The chieftains also said they would not attend the assembly opening ceremony today - marking a departure from tradition where the five together with the ruler, make an appearance at the legislature during its first meeting of the year.

The undang for Sungai Ujong, Mubarak Thahak, however, was not invited to the ceremony as he is considered to have been sacked himself.

The four chieftains for the luak (territories) of Sungai Ujong, Jelebu, Johol, and Rembau are vested with powers to elect and depose the state’s ruler - the Yang di-Pertuan Besar or Yamtuan Besar. The tunku besar of Tampin, meanwhile, is a customary leader for the area.

On Sunday, the Undang Yang Empat held a meeting after which they made two proclamations - to remove Tuanku Muhriz as Yang di-Pertuan Besar; and for Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar to be installed as the next ruler with immediate effect.

This was in response to the Negeri Sembilan Council of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and the Ruling Chiefs (Dewan Keadilan dan Undang) reportedly accepting a move by Sungai Ujong nobles and clansfolk to sack Mubarak as undang over purported transgressions.

The move has been disputed, with the three other undangs and Tunku Besar Tampin reportedly disagreeing with the council’s decision.

Aminuddin had used Mubarak’s sacking to claim that the undangs proclamations were invalid.

The chieftains responded by calling the menteri besar a liar and urged the state assembly members to remove Aminuddin from his office.

The state constitution states that a decision can be made by at least three undangs, or by however many are alive at the time of the decision. - Mkini
