N Sembilan state assembly sitting postponed amid royal feud

The Negeri Sembilan state legislative assembly has postponed its sitting until further notice due to the ongoing feud between state ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and state territorial chieftains.

The decision was made by legislative speaker MK Ibrahim Abd Rahman earlier today, after the assembly’s opening ceremony was boycotted by the Undang Yang Empat and Tunku Besar Tampin, who insisted Tuanku Muhriz abdicate his position.

“In my discretion as the state assembly speaker, to ensure the smooth operation of this assembly and given the current situation in Negeri Sembilan, I decided to postpone the session to a date which will be decided later.

“I hope the issue can be settled before we start our next sitting,” Ibrahim told reporters after the ceremony in Seremban.

The ceremony today saw Tuanku Muhriz officiating the state legislative assembly’s first meeting of the year.

According to the assembly’s initial timetable, the meeting was scheduled for this Monday (April 27) until April 29.

However, the chieftains announced last night that they would not attend the event, citing their decision to “sack” Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

They also urged Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun to postpone the ceremony until a new ruler is properly installed.

Meanwhile, when asked if the absence of the four territorial chiefs and Tunku Besar Tampin would affect the state legislative assembly’s legitimacy, Ibrahim replied in the negative.

He said the opening ceremony only required the ruler’s decree, and this has been met. - Mkini
