Nga Kor Ming thinks KL’s ranking is due to Madani govt; netizens think otherwise

EVERY PROUD citizen of a nation takes pride in the city they live in, and Malaysians are no different. While Kuala Lumpur has its strength and weakness, few foreign cities can match the culture and charm of our beloved city, complete with its unapologetic blemishes.

When the status of our city is being mentioned, many politicians will attempt to attribute its success towards their good governance.

This is an old story, of pride and public relations. Regardless, it makes a fine topic for debate, and more often than not, a good, proper roasting.

And the fire starter is none other than the Minister of Housing and Local Government of Malaysia, Nga Kor Ming, with his recent post on X, stating, “Under the Madani government lead by PMX @anwaribrahim, KL is now the top 10 most popular city in the world.”

“Welcome to visit Malaysia, spend your holiday here and bring back unforgettable wonderful memories!” he continued.

Netizens, however, were quick to point out the folly of his statement. “From 2015 to 2020 Kuala Lumpur is already the top 10 most visited cities in the world, highest ranking #6,” said @kwengsiong.

Turning up the heat is netizen @tedmzs1772 who said Kuala Lumpur was ranked 9th in the year 2010, and 8th in 2015. So does this mean the capital city is being downgraded under the Madani government?

Then there was @bryanyslim, saying that Nga was a boot licker.

Also, @JohanSamim attributed the popularity of Kuala Lumpur to it being visa-free for (30 to 60 days, depending on nationality) tourism or business.

On another note, Asia News Network stated that KL is ranked eighth on a list for the most popular cities that international travellers plan to visit between January and March this year, based on flight booking data from travel service provider, Trip.com Group.

International travellers booking through Trip.com in the first quarter of 2026 showed strong interest in Malaysia’s key attractions, with popular picks including Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park tickets, KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus tours, and a Kuala Lumpur concert by Chinese rock band Miserable Faith.

At the same time, figures from the Department of Statistics Malaysia indicate that visitors are extending their stays.

The average length of stay has increased from 3.8 days in 2022 to 5.1 days in 2024, suggesting a growing appetite to spend more time exploring the country. — Focus Malaysia
