PETALING JAYA:
Sarawak deputy premier Dr Sim Kui Hian said Sabah is proof that an opposition can exist without DAP, reiterating his call for the party to be wiped out at the next state election.

“Sabah has opposition YBs (elected representatives); it’s just that DAP is not among them,” said Sim, who is president of the Sarawak United People’s Party, as quoted by the Borneo Post.

DAP saw all eight of its candidates defeated in the Sabah state election, losing six former stronghold seats and ending up without representation in the state assembly.

Warisan and Perikatan Nasional make up the opposition in the state.

Last weekend, Sim had called on voters to give DAP — which currently serves as the opposition in Sarawak — zero seats in the upcoming state election.

In response, DAP’s Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said having no opposition is not in Sarawak’s interests.

He also warned against returning to the “days when the state government had unfettered powers without any proper accountability”.

Sarawak DAP currently holds two seats in the state — Pending, held by Violet Yong, and Padungan, represented by Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen.

The state assembly’s term expires in February next year, unless dissolved earlier. An election must be held within 60 days of dissolution, or by April at the latest. - FMT
